About the AGHS Gypsy Cob Breeding Up Program
Due to the prohibitive costs of importation for most and the limited number of available purebred gypsy cobs for sale at high costs, a ‘breeding-up’ program (BUP) was introduced. Not only will this permit your average Australasian horse lover to more easily discover, and learn to appreciate the wonderful world of Gypsy Cobs, but it provides a comprehensive record of gypsy cob crosses for the purpose of identifying the crossbreds from the purebreds. In the long term this will help clarify to potential buyers what exactly they are purchasing. The following provides an explanation of the rules & processes that support the breeding up of Gypsy Cobs in Australasia and the difference between a purebred Gypsy Cob and an Australasian Gypsy Cob. A Gypsy Cob is a purebred Gypsy Cob whose parentage traces directly to the horses imported into Australia or New Zealand. These ponies/horses will be registered as purebreds in the AGHS registry complete with their DNA type and parentage DNA verification (if available). An Australasian Gypsy Cob is the resultant progeny after 5 generations of selective crossing of ponies/horses of other breeds with a purebred gypsy cob used in each generation on one side of the equation. Hence its pedigree can only be traced directly to the imported Gypsy cobs on one side only, while the other side, is of another breed. The resultant pony/horse will be classified as an Australasian Gypsy Cob and is registered in the AGHS under the classification of Australasian Gypsy Cob (AGC). Once registered as AGC, DNA will be taken and stored on file. For each generation of crossbreds, DNA must be recorded with the AGHS, but not including the foundation parent. The breeding up program works as follows: 1. All foundation stock must be registered within their own breed society and approved by the AGHS committee before a breeder may start their BUP. However, if the foundation stock is not registered, but still meets the requirements of the AGHS committee then it will be considered acceptable to use as foundation stock. Only partbred mares will be allowed to be used in the BUP. 2. A Foundation mare (FS) of another breed is crossed with a Purebred Gypsy Cob stallion. The resulting progeny is classified as Foundation Stock 1 (FS1). 3. You then take your FS1 and cross her back to a purebred gypsy cob stallion. The resulting progeny is then classified as Foundation Stock 2 (FS2). 4. You then take your FS2 and cross her back to a purebred gypsy cob stallion. The resulting progeny is then classified as Foundation Stock 3 (FS3). 5. You then take your FS3 and cross her back to a purebred gypsy cob stallion. The resulting progeny is then classified as Foundation Stock 4 (FS4). 6. You then take your FS4 and cross her back to a purebred gypsy cob stallion. The resulting progeny is then classified as Foundation Stock 5 (FS5). 7. The FS5 horse must then wait till the age of two before formally being approved by the AGHS standards qualification committee for Australasian Gypsy Cob status (AGC). It is a very long process and will take many years of careful, selective breeding. By the time you get to the 5th generation of continually crossing to purebred stock the Cob should be fundamentally pure and have the full characteristics of a purebred Gypsy Cob.The standard is to insure that breeders are being selective in their program and not using inferior stock and the progeny has the full characteristics of a purebred gypsy cob. Showing Rights * All 5th Generation (and over) AGHS registered Australasian Gypsy Cob horses have equal showing rights with Purebred Gypsy Cobs at all AGHS shows and may be shown in either specific Australan Gypsy Cob classes or Purebred classes where numbers do not allow for seperate classes. * Foundation Stock Australasian Gypsy Cob horses may not be shown along side Purebred horses but may be shown in seperate classes secifically for Foundation Stock Australasian Gypsy Cob's. Where there are not sufficient numbers for seperate classes, Foundation Stock Australasian Gypsy Cob's may be shown along side Partbred Gypsy Cobs at all AGHS Shows. |
